Question by Rhubarb H. Jones: Recipe for Sour Gummy Candy?
I’m looking for a recipe for sour gummy candy a la Sour Gummy Tape or Sour Power Belts.

Here’s the thing: I’m not looking for a recipe based on prepackaged foods like Jell-O. I want to make these from scratch.

Any Ideas?
All the fun is in making them, for me. Eating the candy is only an added bonus. :D

Well, all the recipes I find call for jello to be used, even the one in my culinary textbook. I imagine it would be very hard to find the ingredient that makes the jello jiggly or the gummi gummi, as it’s a derivitive of bone marrow, usually from horses.
I swear that’s true, I took a 2 year culinary class in high school and that was in the section gross but true, as our teacher called it. You don’t want to know some of the other secrets in the candy industry :/

Good luck!

Answer by Steve G
Halva

Ingredients:
1 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup water
1/4 cup rosewater
4 -6 saffron threads or 1/2 teaspoon ground saffron
2 sticks unsalted butter
1 cup all purpose flour

Preparation:
In a small saucepan, bring sugar and water to a boil. Once sugar is dissolved, add saffron and rosewater. You will have a syrup like texture. Remove from heat.

In a medium saucepan, melt butter on medium heat. Add flour slowly and mix with butter to make paste. Slowly add sugar syrup and blend together. Remove from heat.

Immediately, spread mixture into ramekins, or onto a serving plate. Allow to cool, and remove halva from ramekins or cut into small serving pieces.
